Allergies can be controlled with over the counter medications such as Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin or Xyzal, if taken on a daily basis, like early spring when the pollen is at its height, you may need additional help controlling the symptoms of runny eyes, itching, sneezing etc. We can help with this.

Allergies and the common cold can be mistaken for a sinus infection. If you have a history of sinus and allergy issues and over the counter medications aren’t working, you may need to be seen.

Have you ever gotten stung by a bee, wasp, hornet or deer fly? Some individuals have allergic reactions to these bugs and need interventions such as epinephrine and oxygen when there is throat, tongue, lip swelling with “stridor” or noise of breathing through a swollen space like the throat.

Asthma flares can often be a result of upper respiratory infections or allergies. People with asthma usually have albuterol inhalers (rescue inhalers) but sometimes they need more.

If you find yourself struggling to breathe and control your cough, we can give you a nebulizer treatment and steroids to calm the angry lungs. Those who have problems with breathing describe the feeling of panic as they struggle to get air in.

Bronchitis, although viral in nature, can cause difficulties with activities, coughing and interruption in their sleep. Bronchitis can cohabit with allergies and asthma. Wheezing can be significant and can be treated.

Bacterial VS viral: why do we treat them differently when the symptoms are so similar? Because viruses don’t respond to anti-bacterial medication. Viruses have to run their course whereas bacteria can cause systemic or total body breakdown requiring hospitalization and often ICU time.

So why are we so diligent in not prescribing antibiotics? Because I care about what happens to you.

Ear infections can be internal or external; both can cause pain. The provider will make the decision if an antibiotic is needed or if this is something that will heal on its own. The important aspect is to have the pain checked out to avoid a ruptured eardrum. Swimmer’s ear is also very painful and may need treatment.

Fevers are the signal to the brain to look for some type of problem. Depending on the depth of a fever, 99.0 being low grade, 103.0-104.0 could signal a viral or bacterial infection that needs to be assessed. Newborns with a fever need immediate care.

Upper respiratory infections are more common than lower respiratory infections and both are as different as the type of treatment that is needed. Both can be viral or bacterial and need to be assessed as such.

Mouth sores, lesions and sore throats caused by a virus or bacteria can impair the nutritional status of an individual. With treatment, one can expect to improve their ability to swallow and improve their pain.

Dental abscess and infections can also impair eating and therefore being on an antibiotic and controlling pain without narcotics would be the goal of seeing us for this problem.
